The Sun Life Financial Basketball Invitational Tournament marked its first successful league, creating much deserved recognition in the spirit of community inclusiveness and goodwill.
At the finals, Team Pampanga made a surprising victory beating a strong Team Bulacan 57 – 46. Team Pampanga lost the first game, Friday at the Queensborough Middle School gym and on Saturday played 5 games consecutively.
The 2-day league participated by 12 province teams and their supporters was promising, especially on the second day in New Westminster’s Massey Gym, but deemed less stellar during the main highlight of the league’s battle of the champions. With Super Bowl 50 simmering all Sunday, the huge crowd left only a handful supporters to cheer for their favourite teams.
However, main sponsor Burnaby branch Sun Life Financial manager Jay Mallari told the crowd after the final game that he was pleased with the turnout. “Hopefully, with what I’ve seen over the past couple of days, I think this is gonna be an annual league.”
Wrapping up the league, Bhoy Tamondo, president of Inter City Sports Association, expressed his gratitude to all the teams and volunteers that participated.
Team Pampanga players are Joanne Peter Villadolid, Darwin Pamintuan, Rob M. Cordero, Mhark Santos, Rye Uno Arinzana, Ed Ward, and Mike Nicdao.
