The month of June equals Filipino fiestas, festivals, OPM (Original Pilipino Music), barong tagalog, sayas, flag raising, traditional Santacruzan, Filipinism, tinikling, pancit “at iba pa”. A year long preparation to showcase Philippine culture and tradition, and sometimes the yearly anticipated special appearance of TFC or Kapuso artists. This year is loaded with so many celebrations all over Canada. In Metro Vancouver alone, there are over 5 to 6 separate Philippine festivals and flag raisings that is now pretty much prevalent.
One event not to be missed is organized by Surrey Philippine Independence Day Society (SPIDS) marking its 10th year anniversary on June 10th, Sunday, from 10am – 5pm at the Bridgeview Park Community Centre at 11475-126A St., Surrey, a short walking distance from Scott Skytrain Station. Over the years, SPIDS has been recognized by the city of Surrey for its continuous contribution, dedication and service to the community.
Narima dela Cruz
Founder, community advocate and RBC’s “Top 25 Canadian Immigrant recipient” Narima dela Cruz says, “Surrey is home to many Filipinos – almost 34,000 as of the 2016 Statistics. A gathering in celebration of our culture and tradition, and sharing it to Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike, is our way of inspiring and encouraging recognition and acknowledgement of the vibrant presence of our race in this diverse city. Our children and youth inspire us to celebrate each year – for they are the ones who will continue our legacy as Filipino-Canadians, and hopefully, by teaching them our history and cultural tradition, and the heroism and sacrifices of our ancestors, they will endeavor to someday make their own footprints in this country’s history, and make all Filipinos proud.”
SPIDS main highlight is its yearly traditional feature – the beautiful and colorful Santacruzan which will be headlined this year in a “Reunion of Queens” by the Reyna Elenas of the last 9 years. The event will also showcase live band performances, cultural dances, and OPM songs performed by local artists. There will be booth displays/exhibits, parlor games, raffle draw, and food concessionaires.
