My Name was January

Sher Vancouver proudly presents the pre-screening of  “My Name was January” on Saturday – December 10th at the City Centre Library in Surrey.

This is a documentary film by Elina Gress and Lenee Son and produced by Alex Sangha and Ash Brar.

January was a popular Filipino transgender woman who died of 18 stab wounds in September 2012. She was the Social Coordinator of Sher Vancouver and the first transgender person to hold an executive position with the group.

January Marie Lapuz

Everybody who knew January remembers her as a bubbly singer and dancer who was kind, caring and generous. This documentary film is a celebration of January’s life and how she impacted the lives of others. It also uplifts the trans women of colour.

Transgenders, gay, and lesbians continue to struggle day to day in the different communities in Metro Vancouver.

Sher Vancouver hopes to inspire the Filipino community in sharing and telling January’s story. The world premier follows in 2017.
